How can I protect myself from overpayment at a live auction?

Talk to Auction Staff

When attending a live auction, ask questions of the auction staff to compare their answers to those of the auctioneer. The auctioneer is setting up "the sale" during the viewing. The staff might tell you something different, and may give you a "real world" idea of what some items usually go for. But remember, they may also be well trained by the auctioneer, so listen, and don't trust everything you hear.
